Luke Chueh Returns With Boba

1xRUN Thru Interview
Boba by Luke Chueh

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Luke Chueh:
The idea for this painting has been in my head for years now. I love puns and incorporating them into my paintings is one of my favorite things to do. I was basically waiting for the perfect show to feature the work, and they came around when Corey Helford Gallery had their “Pop-Eyeconic” group show.

I think this painting is especially poignant for me because it incorporates so many different aspects of my being. Star Wars if undeniably a big part of who I am. And like most kids my age, Boba Fett was a personal favorite. Boba Tea (or Bubble Tea) is something I can also be easily associate with through my Asian ethnicity. And the hoodie is my favorite article of clothing.  The painting was sold at the show, and though I still have the original sketches and stuff around, I don’t usually sell them unless there’s an occasion, like a book release or something of the sort.

1xRUN: When was this piece created and with what materials?
Luke Chueh: Boba was created over the course of a week using my usual materials acrylic paint on wood panel earlier in 2014.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Luke Chueh:  Boba is pretty unique for me because it does’t feature any of my usual characters, though it has an unmistakeable “Luke Chueh” quality about it.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Luke Chueh:  If you’re a Star Wars fan, or a fan of Asian snacks/beverages, or you’re just a fan of Luke Chueh, then this is the print for you.

1xRun: You have been doing quite a bit of traveling recently, where have you gone recently and what have you been up to?Luke Chueh:   I’ve had the great fortune of traveling to Japan, England, Singapore, China, and across the United States. Most of these trips have been for shows or conventions. It’s been an amazing time and I hope more opportunities to travel come around soon.

1xRun: Any big shows or events that you’ve had this year that you’d like to highlight?
Luke Chueh:   This April, Pretty In Plastic and I are releasing the edition version of our sculpture, “Jack”. This May I’ve got a show with Scott Tolleson at Clutter Gallery in upstate New York. This summer Munky King and I are planning on releasing our next toy, “Bitch” along with the “4ft Possessed” statue, and this October Corey Helford will be hosting my next solo show “Heavenly Dogs”.

1xRun: Are there any new artists that you really have been liking as of late?
Luke Chueh: I’m always doing my best to follow the careers of my friends and colleagues, but as far as something “new”, I’m afraid I can’t say there is anyone specific that comes to mind.

1xRun: Any new music you’ve been listening to lately?
Luke Chueh:  Urghh… I wish there was new music in my life. I’m stuck in an NPR news loop.

1xRun: What was the last piece of art that you bought?
Luke Chueh:  It’s been a while since I bought anything. I think the last piece of art I paid cash for was a drawing by Miss Van.
