Denial Returns With New None Dollar Hand-Painted Multiples Available April 15th

1xRUN Thru Interview
None Dollar by Denial

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece?
Denial: I have been playing with stencils of money for the last 4-5 years and I thought it would be interesting to play with the actual shape of the money as well as subvert the literal content.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme?
Denial: I guess it would fall into my collection of money I have painted in the past.

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Denial: It consists of 13 stencils spray painted on wood panel. Each has a unique background and slight variations to it. These pieces have also been distressed by hand and coated with a urethane finish.

Denial: I originally drew this piece about 2 years ago.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Denial: I really believe along with a lot of other people that the treasury is corrupt and it’s a rigged game that people can’t win…I could go on and on about this, but basically I want to show money in a different shape to present the idea of alternative forms of capitalism.

1xRun: How long did this piece take?
Denial: The original drawing was done over a few weeks to get all the calligraphy and bridging right for the stencils. To make the 50 paintings took me and an assistant about 2 weeks.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Denial:  Square Money.

1xRun: Why should people buy this piece?
Denial:  The original calligraphy and stylization of the bill is absolutely beautiful and I worked really hard to appropriate some of those elements into stencil form.

1xRun: You’ve been traveling like a madman the last few months, bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to?
Denial: Yeah, I got to Australia for a few months and got to paint in Melbourne and Sydney. It was really rad and I look forward to getting back there next winter for another stint. Made some new friends and even linked up with Mr. Brainwash while down there haha. Heading to Chicago next week for a show at Vertical Gallery. Still working on my “Free For All Walls” project and I am looking forward to the artists coming into town this summer!

1xRun: What were some of your biggest takeaways from your recent travel?
Denial: It was pretty sweet to hang out with Ben Frost and his friends down under. Such good peeps, they really made the trip for me and the place is absolutely beautiful! I guess it was nice to escape the polar vortex for a few months too.

1xRun: Now that you’re back and settled in, what are your plans the next 2-3 months here as 2014 gets underway?
Denial: As I said I am in a group show at Vertical Gallery in Chicago and talking to a few galleries in LA and Europe about possible solo shows. I might be doing a 3 day pop up in Toronto in the next few months as well. Other than that just painting everyday again. Ben Frost and I are still working on our “Denialex” collabs and we are gonna put up a website soon.

1xRun: Any artists that you’ve really been inspired by lately to push yourself?
Denial: Bask is really doing big things and I am loving watching his endeavors, guy is so talented and he is one of the only artists I look at his stuff and get jealous. So awesome.

1xRun: Any big events or shows that you have coming up?
Denial: No, this year I am really trying to just leave it up in the air and not plan too much stuff. Been going full steam for a good 5 years, need to chill a little haha, but I always say that and then get right back into it anyways. So we’ll see I guess!
