Glenn Arthur Returns With The Visitant

1xRUN Thru Interview
The Visitant by Glenn Arthur

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is it still for sale?
Glenn Arthur: This painting was created for the LAX/TXL group show in Berlin, Germany with Thinkspace Gallery. It is currently on view at the show through July 12th, 2014 and is available for purchase through Thinkspace Gallery’s website. The title of this painting  is very specific to the piece because the word visitant means, “a being believed to come from the spirit world” or “something, as a mood, feeling, emotion, etc., that overtakes a person from time to time.” I was having a severe creative block for a while when this image came into my head like a visitant and helped me to break through the block.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme or series that you had?
Glenn Arthur:  It wasn’t actually part of any series or theme. I really wanted it to stand on it’s own among all of my other works.

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece?
Glenn Arthur: The original painting is 16×16 inches, acrylic paint on a wood panel.

1xRun: When was the piece created?
Glenn Arthur: From initial sketch to final painting, the whole thing took a little under a month to complete. I started sketching out the idea for the piece in the middle of March and finished the painting in the first week of April.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Glenn Arthur: All of my paintings start as fully realized sketches before I transfer the drawing to a surface for painting. Unfortunately my sketches tend to get ruined in the process as I make a lot of changes and scribble notes on them until I finally settle on the final image. This sketch was no exception. I think I changed the hair at least five times in the process and ended up using a mirrored image of the original sketch for the painting in the end.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Glenn Arthur: It’s a juxtaposition of macabre and beauty aesthetics.

Glenn Arthur: The image is a testament to the power of imagination and breaking through creative blocks.

1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Glenn Arthur: Haunting.

1xRun: What has been keeping you busy as of lately?
Glenn Arthur: I’m currently in full production mode for my next show at Thinkspace Gallery on August 16th, 2014. I’ll be displaying a series of paintings and drawings called Opulent Anomalies that is inspired by royal portraiture and classic carnival side show acts.
