New Series ‘Electric Space Pottery’ By Nick Jaskey

1xRUN Thru Interview
Electric Space Pottery by Nick Jaskey

1xRun: Tell us a bit about this series of work, was it part of a recent theme or show that you had?
Nick Jaskey: This series of paintings is a continuation of a recent show I did called Abstract Space Pottery, which was inspired by African art and outer space.  This is a very exciting series for me, its possibilities are endless.

1xRUN: What materials were used to create these pieces?
Nick Jaskey: Acrylic and spray paint on wood panel.

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Nick Jaskey: I want these paintings to read like prints from afar but when examined up close you can see my hand in all of them. The brush work, the texture, the details, that’s what I find beautiful.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Nick Jaskey: I’ve been into hard-edged geometric painting for about 10 years now.  My work in this realm began with abstract color-study paintings.  Abstract Space Pottery was the first time the work looked like something physical and took on a form.  I was looking at a lot of African baskets, admiring the color palette and shape. While working on the series, I was listening to a bunch of Detroit techno and that’s where the angular abstract space influence came from. I love the idea of these paintings coming to life in zero gravity.

1xRun: How long did these pieces take to complete, individually and as a set?
Nick Jaskey: I worked on Electric Space Pottery off and on over a month.

1xRun: What do you feel is unique about this series of work?
Nick Jaskey: It’s still a fresh new idea for me and it’s a transition period in my work. Every one of them is really fun to make.

1xRun: Any artists that have been inspiring you lately?
Nick Jaskey: I’m inspired by my environment, all the little details created by human existence are what get me going. My work always starts by me shooting photos in my day to day life. The painting happens from there.
