Dalek Debuts With 4 Space Monkey Constellation Variants

1xRUN Thru Interview
Space Monkey Constellation Variants by Dalek

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece.
Dalek: A little bit about the piece… it’s just a space monkey on a mission through some dimensional portal looking for trouble.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had?
Dalek: No…themes are always moving…series are evolutions of progressive and regressive flux and shows are increasingly nonsensical. It’s just a moment in a timeline free to move as it likes.

1xRUN: What materials did you use to create this piece?
Dalek: Paint and wood, for the original that is. I believe the prints are printed using ink on paper.

1xRun: When was the piece created and how long did it take to complete?
Dalek: This was done back in 2013 and  took me a few weeks to finish.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Dalek: It was just a thought and the execution of that thought in artistic medium.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Dalek: I couldn’t say. Again, I prefer that to be a topic of those viewing it.

1xRun: Why should people buy this piece?
Dalek: People should buy it if they like it. My hope is to simply make art and be appreciative to those that support my work and allow me to continue exploring ideas and pushing and pulling with what I do. So in that sense, buying this print allows me to continue making art.

1xRun: When did you first start making art?
Dalek: As a kid, for fun I copied stuff out of comic books and off album covers.. obsessively doodling. It went in and out of phases all throughout my life so far. Shaping itself as it moves along.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on?
Dalek: Comic book stuff at first. Walt Simonson, Frank Miller, Jim Steranko, Disney stuff and then in high school it was really Pushead that sent me off on a tear. The old Zorlac boards he did were all I rode.

1xRun: What artists inspire you now?
Dalek: It’s an endless list and it grows day by day as I discover new things through social media. From all arenas, interior design, architecture, fashion, science and math, nature, and jewelry. It’s everywhere! I am always amazed to see the amount of creative energy that exist in this world…naturally and artificially.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work?
Dalek: I stopped listening to music when I work a while ago. When I did it was pretty much classic rock, punk, and metal.  Van Halen (DL.Roth years) will always put you in a good mood. I also listened to AC/DC,  Slayer, Agnostic Front., Metallica (garage days and earlier) and so on. Now I just listen to sports radio all day. It’s always evolving and changing plus, I’m a bit obsessed with sports so I’ll listen to Mike & Mike and Colin Cowherd. There are some good local sports shows that cover things around here and the ACC in general.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why?
Dalek: That’s a tough question. I am sure there are multiple answers, but I’d have to say Jay Nelson given that what he does with wood and geometry speaks to how I’d like to learn to move some of my ideas from 2 d to 3 d. He is amazing.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any deceased artists who would it be and why?
Dalek: Also a hard question. Such a massive topic to squeeze in such a tight little funnel. I may need to jump on the pile to amalgamate it into an answer. I’d have to say Walt Disney. That dude connected a lot of pieces in a really unique way. If art is meant to be an experience then I think he took it to a whole other level. Maybe if Jeff Koons would take some of his hulk blow ups and other shit and make a Koonsworld, or even better, I’d love to see a Chapman brothers take on a theme park. How amazing would that be? Damien Hirst would also be and artist I’d like to collaborate with. So, add those 3 to the living artist pile up above.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought?
Dalek: Hmmm. I think the first pieces of art that I actually spent money on were two Evan Hecox pieces from a show at New Image Art in 2000. I love his work and I still have them and a few others.

1xRun: What was the last piece of art that you bought?
Dalek: I’m pretty sure the last piece I paid money for was a ridiculously beautiful drawing that Sophie Roach did for me. She kills it.
