Detroit Works by Sheryo & The Yok
1xRun: This was your first time coming to Detroit, what were your initial thoughts of the city?
Sheryo: It was what I expected and way more. Love this place! Don’t want to leave.
The Yok: Yes it was the first time coming out to Detroit. On our first night, straight from the airport we went to an impromptu Techno park rave with Jesse. We had a beer in the park and listened to the music and watched the crowd doing the jig. There were bikes with lights and bikes decked out in alligator skin, then it was on to a rad old soul bar with some sweet afro muma belting out some radness. Love Detroit!
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about these works, when were they created and is there a theme throughout?
Sheryo: We made them in the 1xrun loft while hanging out with the Australian dream team Daek, Fecks and Yok.
The Yok: The work was created during our stay at 1Xrun. I was experimenting with spray paint marbling and it was the first time I had ever tried this technique. It came out rad so I did a few more. The old blue book cover in one that I had found in a dumpster on upper Gratiot Ave. at the abandoned gas station where we were painting. I went with the theme of arctic adventure on this one.
1xRun: What were your thoughts when you left Detroit?
Sheryo: :(
The Yok: Let’s go back!
1xRun: You’re both staying nice and busy, what have you been up to in the last month or so?
Sheryo: Just had a show in New York, and we’re preparing to go to Shanghai for more sprays, then back to NY and then LA for a show. LA peeps, we want to paint walls! HOOK US UP!!!
The Yok: After Detroit we went to Cleveland for a quick spray, then it was on to NY. I was there for one night and then went to Sydney for a week. Back in NY we were busy preparing for our 2nd show at Krause Gallery in Lower East Side where we were showing the Batik works that we made in Indonesia.
1xRun: Any big shows or events coming up ?
Sheryo: Yep, in LA for another show with Yok.
The Yok: We have a big show coming up in LA soon.
