Derek Hess Cooks Up His “Fish Fry Friday” Series

1xRUN Thru Interview
Fish Fry Friday by Derek Hess

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this series, when were these original pieces created?
Derek Hess: This batch were all done within the past 4 months. The images combine two of my favorite things, Native North American fish and WWII air crafts.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent series that you had?
Derek Hess: This group is themed exclusively for 1xRUN. My first batch was done in 2010/2011 and showed during the World’s Largest Crappie Festival in Water Valley Mississippi, that was awesome.

1xRUN: What materials did you use to create this piece?
Derek Hess: All are pen, ink, and acrylic.

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?

Derek Hess: My father was a B-26 pilot and my dad helped instill the interest in the subject. Two of the pieces feature a rock bass morphed with a B-26.

1xRun: What is unique about these pieces compared to some of your other work?
Derek Hess: These are completely different from what I normally do, whatever ‘normal’ means. Anyway, these were just a lot of fun to do. Where as some of the intense pieces that I do I feel I have to do, as to purge it from my system, which works half the time (I tend to carry that stuff with me). I wanted to do these for fun and are a great distraction.

1xRun: Why should people buy one of these original pieces?
Derek Hess: Well, I don’t do many of these. I’ve burned out on them, so there’s only 19 total. I may not do anymore for a few years, or i may not do anymore ever.

1xRun: Describe this series in one gut reaction word.
