1xRUN Thru Interview
Nova by Dan Quintana
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Dan Quintana: Nova is an oil on wood work. About 12-18 layers were applied. The original sold on its release.
1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme or show that you had?
Dan Quintana: The piece did have a theme that was based around the title: Nova. In this case the planet earth, bright with all of its life shining like a star in the universe destined to fall under the demise of mankind, inevitably leveling up into a supernova only to graduate with a stellar explosion. Boom.
1xRun: What materials did you use to create this piece?
Dan Quintana: Oil on wood.
1xRun: When was the piece created?
Dan Quintana: June 2014.
1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Dan Quintana: The painting came from a similar drawing titled “Destructo.”
1xRun:Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Dan Quintana: The idea came about from all of the man-kind self destruction stories and allegories.
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Dan Quintana: 1 month.
1xRun:What is unique about this piece?
Dan Quintana: I’ve tightened up my skin tone textures in oil painting that have bridged my current work.
1xRun:Why should people buy this piece?
Dan Quintana: It’s super neat.
1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Dan Quintana: Cosmic.
1xRun: Your works always blends a few different techniques, what was the first medium that you really worked well with and how did you start transitioning into working with so many different things?
Dan Quintana: I started with pencil drawings like the usual and immediately jumped into oil. Visiting museums and looking at master works in books made my decision an easy one.
1xRun: Tell us a bit about your recent show Foil.
Dan Quintana: It was a 100% collaborative show between Karen Hsaio’s photography and my charcoal work, her models in my oil paintings. Her individual paintings and drawings are equally amazing.
1xRun: You did some traveling over the summer, what was your favorite place and why?
Dan Quintana: New Orleans. The atmosphere, history and food. Love it.
1xRun: Any big shows or events coming up?
Dan Quintana: I will be exhibiting in Miami for Scope this December.
1xRun: Where can we find you?
Dan Quintana: Instagram @quintanarte
