Greg Gossel Returns With His New Series Superficial!

1xRUN Thru Interview
“Superficial!” by Greg Gossel

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about these pieces.
Greg Gossel: I created this series in preparation for my upcoming show “Superficial!” opening next month at Vertical Gallery in Chicago. It’s a small hand printed series incorporating all new comic based imagery from the show. I tried to keep the process loose and spontaneous, giving the series kind of a test print feel.

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this series with?
Greg Gossel: Each print in the series was first hand collaged with vintage comic book and tabloid pages, then hand deckled, sanded and stained with layers of spray paint and acrylic washes. From there, each piece was built up with numerous layers of hand pulled silkscreen prints.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Greg Gossel: As I prepare for each show I like to explore new ideas on a smaller scale. This series was created through that process of working out new ideas on paper and building up the surfaces in a spontaneous way.

1xRun: Why do you feel people will like these pieces?
Greg Gossel: I took a lot of pride in the handwork and attention to detail that went into this series. The collage and countless layers of screen printing gives the series a great surface texture and makes each piece really unique.

1xRun: Describe this series in one gut reaction word.
Greg Gossel: Pow!

1xRun: You’ve been staying very busy this year, bring us up to speed on what you’ve been doing so far in 2014.
Greg Gossel: Yeah it’s been great. I had the opportunity to do a large solo show at White Walls in San Francisco earlier this year along with group shows at One Grand Gallery in Portland and Corey Helford Gallery in LA. I also had the chance to install a new outdoor piece here in Minneapolis this spring which was a lot of fun.

1xRun: You recently had a show at Vertical Gallery, tell us a bit about it?
Greg Gossel: I’ve really enjoyed working on this show. It’s my most vibrant and colorful exhibition to date as I’ve explored a variety of new comic book/superhero based imagery. I’ll be showing over 30 new original works on paper, wood and canvas in a variety of scales. I’ll also be installing an outdoor site-specific piece while in Chicago.
