Bleach By Sarah Joncas

1xRun Thru Interview
Bleach by Sarah Joncas

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still available?
Sarah Joncas: This piece was painted last year for the ‘Subtle Art of Pop Culture’ show at Gallery 1988. It was their anniversary show and they simply requested a work inspired by any film, book, cartoon, comic etc. ‘Bleach’ was inspired by the movie ‘The Cell’, much underrated by my perspective. I’ve always loved a good psychological thriller, but this one had such great visuals and cinematography! Any artist has to at least respect the imagination of it, even if they didn’t enjoy the movie itself.

The original is still available, though it will actually be getting put into the anniversary show ’13th Hour’ at the Last Rites Gallery this October. Thus anyone interested in it can get on the preview with that gallery. I will be offering a couple other originals through 1xRUN though, ‘Concrete Wilderness’ and ‘The Descent‘.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about…
Sarah Joncas: Since this was almost a piece of fan art, having created it based off  ‘The Cell’, it was mainly about exploring that eerie feeling and atmosphere of the film. Due to wanting to keep the work on the smaller side, I decided upon a simple portrait piece. Overall what I most loved about making the work was the contrast between the milky water and her textured, dappled skin.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Sarah Joncas: A few months.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Sarah Joncas: I do indulge in a creepy piece of art here and there, but I feel I really pushed myself with the realism and quality of this work. It’s very simple too, not a lot to the composition, but it has a great punch to it.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Sarah Joncas: It’s a great quality print at a very affordable price.

1xRun: Describe the print in one gut reaction word.
Sarah Joncas: Eerie.

1xRun: You wrapped a new show at the tail end of the summer, how did things go?
Sarah Joncas: The show went very well! My first time showing and visiting San Diego too. I loved the city, very picturesque and the Subtext Gallery was a wonderful space. Would enjoy going back. I feel the work was a step up for me too. I try hard at improving each year and hopefully that translates to other people.

1xRun: You’ve been staying busy over the past few months, tell us a little about what you’ve been up to.
Sarah Joncas: I do try to keep my name and work out there with the group shows. They’re a lot of fun for me too, getting something out that doesn’t need to be apart of a bigger theme. I recently finished up a ‘Lolita’ inspired drawing for a Kubrick themed show at Spoke Art, as well as a small portrait titled ‘Summer’ for Suggestivism, which opened at Copro Gallery this past August.

1xRun: What else is on tap for you for the rest of 2014, any other big events on the docket?
Sarah Joncas: I’m finishing 2014 up with a couple smaller shows, including the ’13th Hour’ which ‘Bleach’ is going to be apart of. There’s also a large group show at Hashimoto Gallery late October and I’ll have a 14×14″ piece for that. But mainly I’m working towards a 2 person show I’ll be sharing at the Thinkspace Gallery next February with Camilla D’Errico. Kind of a reunion show for us since we had one back in 2007 as well. Going to have around 10 pieces for that!
