In Greed We Trust by Van Saro

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Van Saro: The original has been sold, however that painting is the start of a whole series that I’m doing based on currency. I will be offering the first paintings of the series through 1xRUN.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent series you had?
Van Saro: It is the first painting from my series on money.

1xRun: When was the piece created?
Van Saro: I did this painting in July, it was painted on wood with oil paint.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Van Saro: I only paint things that are relevant in my life or what is on my mind, and after having my first child the financial pressure is much more prevalent.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Van Saro: About 4 weeks.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Van Saro: It is the first spark in my new series.

1xRun: Why should people buy this piece/print?
Van Saro: Cause my son needs diapers, Homie!

1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Van Saro: Slavery.

1xRun: Bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to since our last release…
Van Saro: Tattoos and commissions. It’s been hard getting time to start this new series, but I finally got it crackin.. It’s been a busy year for me.

1xRun: Let’s talk about some of the recurring themes in your work, why do you find yourself coming back to these themes?
Van Saro: I’m honest with my work. My world has been more about darkness then light, that’s what I paint.

1xRun: Several pieces in this series feature this gas mask iconography, do you want to elaborate on the importance of this theme and it’s prevalence lately in your work?
Van Saro: The mask reps anonymity, as well as a toxic world and soul.

1xRun: Have there been any artists that have been particularly inspiring you as of late?
Van Saro: My artistic inspiration almost always comes from music.. Vinnie Paz, Lowkey, Immortal Technique, and Tupac to name a few.

1xRun: Any big shows or events in the next 2-3 months that you’d like to talk about?
Van Saro: My next solo show is slated for 2016 at La Luz De Jesus Gallery.. I wanted to have some time to play with ideas before I have another big show, however I might do another solo show in between now and the next one. Also I wanted to make sure that I have enough time in my schedule for my tattoo art as well as private commissions.
