Scribe Returns With New Print Release – Out Of The Abundance Of The Heart, The Mouth Speaks

1xRUN Thru Interview
Out Of The Abundance Of The Heart, The Mouth Speaks by Scribe

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original for sale?
Scribe: The rhino Rumpus has always been an extension of me. The connection to moving forward in my life and how I would be responsible for speaking my future just seems to get more real for me every day. Getting down about something and discouraged can become a weight you carry and hard to get rid of if you don’t change your heart first and its attitude then it has an effect on how you speak on a day to day. Speaking that change into a reality is up to you and your hearts real desire. Yes, the original and 3 sketches are for sale here alongside the prints.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent show that you had?
Scribe: I just finished a piece in Atlanta at the A3C Festival that ties into this piece. Learning to ignore the pressures around you, releasing the past and baggage and how that can change your heart to be either softer or hard as a rock are at the center of what I am thinking about.

1xRUN: What materials did you use to create this piece?
Scribe: This piece was all acrylic on wood panel.

1xRun: When was this piece created?
Scribe: August of 2014 and the larger spray paint piece I mention from Atlanta was October 2014.

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Scribe: I’ve recently signed a book deal with Andrews and McMeel that will target kids around 8-13 years old and one of the main characters is Rumpus the rhino. It is him as a 12 year old artist and in many ways is a way to tell about his younger years before the Resound Fields stuff that I mentioned in my last interview. I continue to work on that story for more adults but it is on and off with all the stuff I got on my plate right now.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Scribe: Trying to self teach how to water down acrylics more and build stuff up in translucent layer, still working on how to do it.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Scribe: I did most of it in a day with some touch ups the following evening.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Scribe: I almost never do lettering but there are faint letters in his skin. I tread lightly about ever saying that anything is unique what I might be doing.

1xRun: Why should people buy this piece?
Scribe: I hope they make a personal connection with it and the title as an encouragement.

1xRun: Describe the print in one gut reaction word.
Scribe: Accountable.

1xRun: It’s been a bit since we caught up and it seems like you’ve been keeping busy, bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to since our last release?
Scribe: My work at the hospital has taken up a lot of my time. I spent a good part of a year going around Kansas City and trying to freshen up walls I had painted many years ago. I felt like I was getting too far away from painting outside and I wanted to get back to that. I’m hoping this new book I am starting to work on this year affords me the time later down the road to travel a little more and paint.

1xRun: Any shows or exhibitions you were a part of that you want to mention?
Scribe: Since I was working on walls and the hospital work then I have slowed down some on show stuff. Me and my wife had a show I really enjoyed this year at Rotofugi in Chicago but with my current work schedule I have to take less shows so I don’t over do it and burn out. Doing a lot of things and remaining family focused is a tough balance.

1xRun: Any recent murals that you’d like to highlight?
Scribe: This last year I did a mural in KC that is of our state fish the Channel Catfish. The people at Evolution Audio were great to only let me show them a thumbnail of a fish sketch. Other than that I made it up on the spot and turned it slowly into submarine with Rumpus in it. My buddy Wheatkracker filmed the whole thing and time lapsed it. Its on Youtube under Scribe’s Catfish and is probably one of the most fun things I have done in awhile.

1xRun: For those who don’t know, you paint extremely fast when painting murals, tell us a bit about how that evolved for you and you managed to get the quality and speed both at such a high level?
Scribe: I don’t really know how it happened? I have been painting 22 years now and I guess that might have something to do with it but mostly learning to trust yourself while you work and let what you have learned over time take over more than over thinking anything.

1xRun: Do you find that speed carrying over into your fine art pieces or do those tend to take you a bit more time than a mural might?
Scribe: No, I wish it did. I’m a lot more unsure of myself and question myself when I work on small pieces at home.

1xRun: Your work is friendly for all ages, has that been a conscious decision to make more child friendly imagery or has that always been a bit in your wheelhouse?
Scribe: My style naturally attracts those ages. I think there is a responsibility with that especially when it is in the public eye. People complain about the effects of advertising on youth and I hope I offer a different choice to what they view out there. My style naturally comes out of me and I personally like the fact that it is something a family can possibly share together or brings them together while sending multiple messages for different ages.

1xRun: Any new artists that have been inspiring you to push yourself as of late?
Scribe: The new works coming out of James Marshall – Dalek has been really awesome. Its honestly hard to just mention one nowadays. Things like Instagram and stuff like that make so many awesome images roll by inspiring you to keep working hard.

1xRun: Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Scribe: Other than my book project I only have 2 shows planned for 2015 so I can give each commitment my all. One show will be at Stranger Factory in the Spring and one in Kansas City for my hometown supporters.
