Maori Equus by Scott Musgrove
1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, was it part of a recent theme, series or show that you have?
Scott Musgrove: This painting was done for my show at the Jonathan Levine Gallery. It’s part of a series of paintings and sculptures of extinct North American animals that I’ve been working on for a while now.
With this one in particular I was thinking about how people will kill animals for their fur to use as coats, rugs, etc. and realized that some people (at least in the past) look at animals as just raw materials for their own vanity. So, I’m assuming that this species was hunted into extinction so people could re-upholster their living room chairs.
1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Scott Musgrove: Oil on canvas.
1xRun: When was the piece created and how long did it take to complete?
Scott Musgrove: I can’t recall exactly how long it took, but it was done back in 2005 and I’d guess around 2-3 weeks to finish.
1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Scott Musgrove: Those things floating in the background, they’re dog larvae. Rarely seen.
1xRun: Why do you feel people will want to buy this print?
Scott Musgrove: People should buy this print so they don’t forget to not go out and kill wild animals, especially endangered ones. If you don’t have this print you might absentmindedly go out and kill the last white rhino or something. Then you’d be pretty bummed…and maybe imprisoned.
1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Scott Musgrove: Huggable!
1xRun: What influences does living in the Pacific Northwest have in your work?
Scott Musgrove: It’s such a varied and naturally beautiful area. I can walk a block from my house and see Mt Rainier, Lake Washington, The Cascade Mountains and the Olympic Range. Then I can walk back home and get back to napping/painting. In this way I don’t waste a lot of time and money on travel. All I need is right here.
1xRun: Take us through a bit of the evolution of your style, how do you feel your work has progressed through the years from your earliest paintings to now?
Scott Musgrove: Early on I started painting with acrylics but was always trying to emulate the look of oils. Then I had a bright idea: Why not just learn to paint with oils? So I did and I’m still learning.
1xRun: Can you bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to since your last release with us The Hiker?
Scott Musgrove: I’m currently working on paintings and sculptures for my upcoming show at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in NYC this coming May. So it’s just paint, paint, snack, paint repeat.
