Kid Acne Returns with Commander Makara

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, was there an original created or solely for this print edition?
Kid Acne: There’s isn’t an original as such. I did sketch out the idea earlier in the year and always had the intention of doing this as a print release. Once I found time in my schedule, I reworked the drawing ready to make the edition.

1xRun: When was the piece created?
Kid Acne: I made the final drawing a couple of weeks ago.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a series or theme that you have?
Kid Acne: This piece is based on Commander Makara from Star Fleet / X Bomber. I’ve been making sketches of characters from various animations and comic books, which I feel have inspired my Stabby Women in some shape or form. Commander Makara definitely fits into that category! I intend to make a whole homage series of strong female characters – either in an exhibition, fanzine or as a set of prints. I’m not sure yet, but there’s around 50 or so I’ve been working on.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about.
Kid Acne: I knew I wanted to make a one color print and similar to the Sphinx edition from the Summer, I chose to invert the character to make use of the negative space, which I think creates maximum impact. It also gives the appearance of a traditional brass rubbing, which I also like.

1xRun: How long did these pieces take?
Kid Acne: The prints took me about a week to make. From generating the artwork, tearing the paper to size, coating the screens, printing, signing, numbering and embossing.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Kid Acne: As with the past couple of editions I’ve produced with 1xRUN, I printed these myself at B&B Gallery and print studio, here in Sheffield.

1xRun: Bring us up to speed on what you’ve been up to since your last release, how have you been keeping busy?
Kid Acne: Since the last edition we did, I’ve been exhibiting work in England, Italy and Denmark, working in the studio and getting ready for a solo show in L.A. in the new year.

1xRun: Any new murals or outdoor installations you’d like to highlight?
Kid Acne: The most recent big mural I did was for Festival of the Mind in Sheffield.

1xRun: Are there any artists that have been motivating you to push yourself as of late?
Kid Acne: Just the usual suspects. Prolific people who dance to their own rhythm.

1xRun: You’re constantly working in a lot of different mediums including music, anything new on those fronts?
Kid Acne: I was hoping to have released an album this year, but we decided to wait until 2015 now as things have been hectic with artwork and various other commitments. We’re recording an album and a couple of E.P.s under the name MONGRELS. Hold tight!

1xRun: Any upcoming exhibitions or events coming up as the year winds down?
Kid Acne: I have some work in a few group shows leading up to Christmas in Sheffield, London and Chicago. Otherwise, I’m putting my efforts into my forthcoming show at C.A.V.E Gallery, Venice Beach, which opens in January.
