Trav Debutes with Something New

1xRUN Thru Interview
Something New by Trav

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about these original pieces.
Trav: I did my first solo show last June in Los Angeles. The work was a fusion of text over geometric patterns. When I started getting close to completing my pieces, I started having fun pushing the text behind the patterns, making the work less about the message, and more about the process.

1xRUN: What materials were used to create these pieces?
Trav: These pieces are all made the same way, lettering enamel on wood panels.

1xRun: When was these pieces created?
Trav: I started these pieces in July, but kept them on ice for some time while I had other work going on.  Which worked out for the better because I was able to look at the pieces with a new perspective once I got back to them.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Trav: I worked on all ten pieces at once. I would shuffle them around to allow paint to dry and to also keep them somewhat cohesive.  I start with the pattern and build from there. Each element is a reaction from a previous element. I continue to add until I feel they are well balanced.

1xRun: How long did these piece take?
Trav: Too long in my opinion.

1xRun: What is unique about this series compared to your other work?
Trav: These pieces are less about a message, and more about the process, challenging myself, and having fun.  They pay homage to my love for typography and challenging myself to make text look good interacting with patterns and depth.

1xRun: When did you first start making art?
Trav: Realistically, I started less than a year ago. I have painted graffiti for years, dabbled minimally as a graphic designer with no real desire to make art.  I never wanted to force it.  I just wanted to have fun, and paint for my own reasons.  In 2013 I started helping a friend in the studio which allowed me to see the differences in the two worlds of art and graffiti, and for the first time appreciate those differences. I am grateful that it happened this way.
