Saner Returns with El Brujo

1xRun Thru Interview
El Brujo by Saner

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original for sale?
Saner:  This piece was made in 2013. It was part of all my artwork that was presented at Scope, and that original is no longer available for purchase. The most interesting thing about my work is I don’t do preliminary sketches, so we could say everything is unique.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme that you had?
Saner: This piece belongs to a set I have been working on and it’s about how we can de-contextualize international icons of the Mexican culture. That’s why I took the classic image of Mickey Mouse. I wanted to reconstruct his face making a personalized adaptation. That’s what happened with “Halloween” or “The Day of The Dead” in Mexico and the United States, both countries re-adapt traditions from different perspectives. “El Brujo” is a mystical character that can save people from some diseases whether physical, emotional or spiritual.

Saner: The original was created using acrylic on canvas.

1xRun: When was the piece created? How long did this piece take?
Saner: 2013. I don’t remember exactly how long that took me, but it was a few months.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Saner: Everything. I used special icons and a special color palette. I tried so that every piece has a particular essence.

1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.

1xRun: Tell us what you have been up to since our last release, what has been keeping you busy over the summer and fall of this year?
Saner: This year has been amazing, full of great journeys! I’ve had quite a few trips to New Zealand, Las Vegas, Australia, Barcelona, Sao Paolo, Tunisia, Berlin, Isla Mujeres, and San Luis Potosí. I have painted incredible walls and I had my first solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Arts in San Luis Potosi. This has been a bit of what has kept me busy this year.

Saner: My last show at the Museum of Contemporary Arts in San Luis Potosi, Mexico: “La locura de un hombre desconocido” which allowed me to work different supports. Also, being part of the recent exhibition at Urban Nation Berlin, curated by Jonathan Levine Gallery.

1xRun: Have you made a recent strides in your work that you feel have helped you progress as an artist?
Saner: I am pretty sure it is a matter of being consistent with everything you do. All the knowledge I have learned with my partner Lalix and, of course, Mexican society and its many injustices. I believe my work is all about that.

1xRun: Do you have any new influences that have been motivating you as of late?
Saner: Life is the only motivation in my artwork.
