Canlove Ends Their Metaliflora Series With Octophyllum Multipas And Orchidae Diutinus

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about these pieces?
Can Love: Each is an original work. Every Metaliflora is hand-cut and folded from a single recycled spray paint can.

1xRun: Were these pieces part of a recent theme or series you had?
Can Love: We collect and transform thousands of spray cans, so over time we have noticed how different paint brands dry inside. We often paint the flowers, but for this series we wanted to leave the natural color, pattern, and texture of the can.  We feel it’s important to showcase the inner beauty of these cans. We’re fascinated by the natural themes that form within each brand.

1xRUN: What materials are used  to create these unique pieces of art?
Can Love: The only material here is a steel spray paint can, naturally painted through our popping process. The cans are depressurized and left to dry for a few days. We then cut them open and set them free.

1xRun: When were these pieces created?
Can Love: These works were created over the month of November, 2014.

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Can Love: As this is our first series with 1xRUN, we thought it would be great to showcase a few completely new flower cuts that have never been seen until now – and may never be seen again. We also thought it would be cool to use a few different brands of spray paint to showcase the way each one dries. Some cans, like MTN94, are flat and patterned while the Montana GOLD have more movement and texture.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Can Love: We dubbed these flower creations Metaliflora and we’ve been experimenting with different shapes and forms for a few years. We challenged ourselves to create the greatest and most efficient use of one recycled spray paint can. The flower bloomed naturally. This series is partially about us returning to our roots. When we started cutting these flowers we wouldn’t paint them as we often do now. We’ve been venturing into this raw approach with some of our other work. It feels right to introduce it with this series as well.

1xRun: How long does one can typically take to complete?
Can Love: If you add up all the time it takes – to collect, organize, pop, dry, plan, and cut – it breaks down to roughly two hours a flower.

1xRun: What do you feel are unique about these pieces?
Can Love: I guess you could say everything. For one, each can is unique and has it’s own story – it’s very own finger (paint) print. The can popping process always produces a unique pattern inside the can because as the marble moves around inside it leaves its tracks on the wet paint. Each flower is cut by hand and no two flowers are exactly alike. Each one is completely unique. And every box we shipped had a custom paint job.

1xRun: Why should people buy one of these unique pieces?
Can Love: We know people will appreciate the time and care we put in. CANLOVE is not just a name for us, it’s what we do everyday. Those who feel it, know it. Spread the love.

1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Can Love: Ouch.

1xRun: When did CanLove first start making art?
Can Love: That’s a pretty deep question. Let’s just say for the sake of time, the concept for CANLOVE happened in 2003. It was around 2009 though where it really became the art as we know it.

1xRun: What was your first piece?
Can Love: The first piece ever made was very similar to the Canscape work we do now. It was about 20 cans stitched together with rivets into a quilt-like object and hung on a wall.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on?
Can Love: Early on it was always street artists who inspired. Being a graffiti artist and using spray paint on the regular, inspiration came from friends and artists that were in magazines all around the world. Cutting open a spray paint can for the first time was more of an inquiry than an artistic challenge. What really shaped up after this experiment an interest in branding.

1xRun: What artists inspire you now?
Can Love: So many to name but first and foremost are the artists that are also friends, because when you see how other artists operate firsthand, it is so much more inspiring. Meggs, Jim Darling, Apex, Jen Stark, Friends with You, Danny Fila, Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Faile, David Choe, Aryz, Blu, Os Gemeos, How/Nosm and all the nameless artists that leave their mark because its in their soul to delightfully disrupt public space.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what?
Can Love: Of course. Everything from A-Trak to Zepplin. Comedy and podcasts too.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why?
Can Love: Hard to say. Someone like Chihuly really has the right mindset for installation work. And to create art on that massive scale like Christo would be a real amazing opportunity. But El Anatsui would be incredible. We use a lot of the same techniques and his ability to create organic forms with typical objects is inspiring.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any deceased artists who would it be and why?
Can Love: If it was to truly collaborate – Basquiat or Keith Haring, because they both were graffiti artists, but in a completely different way than artists today. They would both be really interesting to work with and to see what they thought of our work.
