1xRUN Thru Interview
Headphones by Luke Chueh
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Luke Chueh: “Headphones” was created for my 2014 solo show, “Self-ish”, at Corey Helford Gallery. As the show title implies, the paintings created had a autobiographic theme, and as many have come to expect from me, most of the paintings from this show were rich in metaphor and symbolism, but there were a couple of paintings that were simply reflections of my everyday life. “Headphones” is one of those paintings.
As the painting illustrates, my rabbit stands in a relaxed pose, wearing a hoody, and donning a pair of headphones. On a good day, you can find me assuming the same pose, going for a walk around my neighborhood, listening to whatever suits my mood.
I’m happy to say that this painting has sold.
1xRun: How long did this piece take to create and what materials were used?
Luke Chueh: This piece was created using acrylic paint on wood panel. The painting took me at least a week to create and a life time to come up with.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Luke Chueh: I think this painting sticks out cause it’s one of the few that I’ve created where I’ve decided to avoid clever narratives & symbolism, and went straight for a physical reflection of who I am and how I live.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Luke Chueh: I can think of a couple reasons why they should buy this print. First, the owner feel a connection with the image. Hopefully, looking at it fills them with a feeling, wether it be kinship, melancholy, happiness, or whatever.
The second reason is that they feel that the print is a worthwhile investment. Maybe they consider me an artist with a bright future, and that they are willing to bet that this print will be worth a lot more in the secondary market.
Hopefully the potential buyer feels both.
1xRun: Describe the print in one gut reaction word.
Luke Chueh: Urban.
1xRun: Where else can people find you?
