Stephanie Buer Returns With Dequindre Cut

1xRUN Thru Interview
The Dequindre Cut by Stephanie Buer

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Stephanie Buer: The original is still available, through Thinkspace Gallery.  This painting is from an image I took while exploring the Dequindre Cut in Detroit, just outside of the Eastern Market.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Stephanie Buer: I did this piece for a group show put together by Thinkspace Gallery titled LAX/SFO which took place in San Francisco at Hashimoto Contemporary Gallery this past October. I’ve always wanted to do a piece about the Dequindre Cut, but the images hadn’t fit well with any of my larger bodies of work for past shows. Group shows are usually a good time for me to play around with pieces like this.

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Stephanie Buer: Oil paint on canvas.

1xRun: When was this piece created?
Stephanie Buer: I did this piece back in October 2014 over the span of about a week.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Stephanie Buer: I always get my ideas for pieces by wandering around cities and taking pictures. I sometimes start out with an idea or theme in mind, but the weather conditions or what I find will often dictate the direction of a piece or a body of work. I didn’t head out that day intending to explore this corridor, I just ended up there. It was an exciting day!

1xRun: What do you feel is unique about this piece?
Stephanie Buer: The abundance of trees and plants.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Stephanie Buer: I like these images of Detroit because they’re a piece of history, a glimpse into a landscape that is very quickly changing. This little peaceful, overgrown corridor in Detroit doesn’t exist like this anymore. It has been cleaned up and transformed into a bike path.

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Stephanie Buer: Green!

1xRun: As we start a new year, tells us a bit about some of your favorite moments from 2014.
Stephanie Buer: Last year was pretty great. I traveled over seas for the first time! I went to Tanzania and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. I also climbed Mt. Rainier, the tallest mountain in Washington state. I really love mountain climbing if you haven’t noticed.  In August I had a two person show with Mary Iverson at Thinkspace Gallery. That was really amazing, probably my favorite show to date. Mary is such a nice person and a very talented artists. I thought our work went very well together and I was very happy with the work I did for that show. The whole experience was just amazing!

1xRun: What are your plans for 2015? Any big shows or events coming up that you’d like to share?
Stephanie Buer: I will be having my very first solo show in NYC this March, with the Lyons Wier Gallery, I’m very excited about that! I haven’t been to NYC since I was a kid either, so I’m really looking forward to spending some time there. I will also be showing in Detroit this summer, with Thinkspace Gallery. I lived in Detroit for 10 years, my family is all still in Michigan and I have lots of good friends in that city, so I’m super excited to be bringing some work home! I have lots of mountain climbing plans, of course, I’m really looking forward to playing outside this summer!
