Where Fawn Once Lay by Austin Brady
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece was it created solely for this release or was there an original piece created?
Austin Brady: The print is of a work titled “Where Fawn Once Lay” and it is part of a larger series I did while at my residency with Redbull House of Art.
1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Austin Brady: The overall theme that I was trying to accomplish with the series was to mask and reveal simultaneously. Each portrait in the series comes down to a fairly simple equation: one part of my personal mythologies, one part my relationship to the subject, and one part archetype. “Where Fawn Once Lay” happens to be about romantic love and ones normal fears and worries when romantic love meets lifestyle assimilation.
1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Austin Brady: The original work is a combination of collage, painting, and drawing on panels made of birch and pine.
1xRun: When was the piece created?
Austin Brady: The original work was created between May and August of 2014 while working on the rest of the pieces in the series.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Austin Brady: The title came about when I started to really plan my future with someone, who is also the subject in the portrait. It’s terrifying and wonderful and sometimes you don’t know which one of those feelings you are experiencing at any given time. I recalled laying in a field with the the girl in the portrait a few years ago while we were in Grand Rapids, Michigan for my aunts wedding. We came across patches of grass pressed down from sleeping deer and we decided to do the same. It just seemed like an appropriate parallel to me. Execution of the piece however, was much harder for me. I was a bit obsessed with getting this one just right, and trying to find the right images to sum up a relationship with someone that you are so very close to is damn near impossible.
1xRun: What do you feel is unique about this piece?
Austin Brady: Out of the series, this is the only piece that really has external bodies. In most of the works, all the parts are fully anchored onto the figure, this one has insects flying around her head. I wanted it to be slightly panicked, but ultimately dreamlike.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Austin Brady: It’s the first one in the series I started and the last one I finished.
