CRYPTIK Returns to 1xRUN With His POW! WOW! Hawaii Print “Avalokiteshvara”

1xRUN Thru Interview
‘Avalokiteshvara’ – Mantradala Series by CRYPTIK

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale? Was it created solely for this release or was there an original piece created?
Crypik: This print is based on a couple of paintings I did in early 2014. They were some of my first experiments using gradients and single-sized mantras. I was curious to see what type of effect it would have by inverting the colors, light to dark – dark to light, which is still something that I’m experimenting with in my work today.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Crypik: This piece is part of an ongoing series, which I refer to as ‘Mantradalas’ (Mantra + Mandala). It’s an exploration of how art can be used as a tool for meditation, introspection, trance induction, etc…

1xRun: When was the piece created?
Crypik: 2014.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Crypik: I’ve always been inspired by color theory and optical illusions because they prove to us how limited our perception really is – it’s like a glitch in the ‘Matrix.’ This piece is one of my earlier attempts at simply trying to create a sense of depth & movement using color gradations.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Crypik: About 2 weeks.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Crypik: I’m really excited about this piece because it’s the most colors I have ever used on a print, not to mention the incredible amount of work that went into mixing the colors. I’m especially pleased with the amount of flake in the metallic inks, which were all custom formulated by the good people at In-House. Shoutout to Frank and Roberta!

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Crypik: The ‘Om Mani’ mantra is generally regarded as a mantra for compassion, invoking the blessings of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion. Avalokitesvara is also referred to as “The Protector” so this piece is really for anyone seeking compassion, as well as, protection in their lives.

1xRun: Describe the print in one gut reaction word.
Crypik: GLEAMING!

1xRun: Tell us about some of the artists you’re really excited to see paint for POW!WOW! Hawaii.
Crypik: Geez, TOO MANY!!! El Mac, Alexis Diaz, Case, Aaron Horkey, James Jean, Smithe, etc…

1xRun: Do you have any plans for your wall out there or are you just going to improvise it?
Crypik: I have a general idea of what I’ll be doing, but I always like to see the wall in person before making any final decisions. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. BIG MAHALOZ!
