Barrels Of Fun by Bob Dob
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, was it created solely for this release or was there an original piece created?
Bob Dob: The painting was created for my solo show last November called “Exit Home”, the narrative for the show was how numb the general public has become to violence through our entertainment. I took two very recognizable pop culture characters, Mario and Luigi, and removed them from their world and put them into ours as LA gang members. My studio mate at the time was Greg Simkins who helped with the graffiti. All the paintings from the show had elements of L.A. gang culture but this piece “Barrels of Fun” focused on the whole story in one shot. The original is still available. 1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Bob Dob: I projected my sketch onto canvas for this painting and then built up the values with black and white gesso. Once the under painting is there I start glazing color with oil paints.
1xRun: When was this piece created?
Bob Dob: The idea for the painting started back in 2011. After many sketches I finally started the painting May 2014.
1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Bob Dob: I tried to bring in as many characters from Super Mario Bros as I could. Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong and Princess Peach are in the front car with Bowser and some Koopas getting blown up and a few Goombas hanging out on the street.
1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Bob Dob: I like to work on numerous paintings at one time so this one would have took about 6 weeks if I did it non stop.
1xRun: What do you feel is unique about this piece?
Bob Dob: I experimented with 2 strong light sources with this painting. The fires and explosions created some nice complementary colors on the buildings while the warm light from the sun hit the buildings.
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Bob Dob: Because it will be a great conversation piece at Thanksgiving. Plus, if you’re a gamer I think you’ll enjoy the new take on Mario and Luigi.
