N.C. Winters Returns With “Tempest”

1xRUN Thru Interview
Tempest by N.C. Winters

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale? Was it created solely for this release or was there an original piece created?
N.C. Winters: “Tempest” was a commissioned work, and has since sold. The buyer is a frequent buyer and had been wanting something a bit larger, a bit more ornate, a bit more of a composition than some of my recent works. There was definitely a focus on pushing the boundary of what I had previously created, and I am pleased with the result, as was he.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had?
N.C. Winters: It fits into a recent interest in flourish details and a super ornate style. I ebb in and out of this mode but often find myself returning to subject matter that is super rich with detail.

1xRUN: What materials did you use to create this piece?
N.C. Winters: Mostly pen and ink, with washes of acrylic inks and some thin washes of acrylic as well.

1xRun: When was this piece created?
N.C. Winters: 2012-2014.

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
N.C. Winters: Just take it all in, I added a lot of detail and enjoy the process of making and hope the viewer can get lost in it.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
N.C. Winters: The buyer and I have a great relationship. He knows I don’t love a lot of art direction with commissioned (or any) work and he has confidence that I’ll deliver something he’ll be happy with. This makes the patron/artist experience really rewarding. He gave me a list of a few previous pieces he’d taken an interest in and basically told me to have fun and try to make something with a similar feel (as I make work in a variety of styles) and to focus on a larger, more intricate complex piece. I had something in mind but wanted to really push the envelope for this one.

I have made a few paintings that incorporate a series of narratives that revolve around my relationship to my son as a father and this is the next major piece in that ongoing series. I imagine this series may last for several decades as I explore what it means to be a dad and watch my son grow and evolve and create his own world. Interestingly, the previous piece and origin of this series was with a previous 1XRUN release: “Overdrive.”

I don’t generally like to get into the granular of what a piece means, but “Tempest” has several layers of meaning that correspond with various states of the mind and the aforementioned experience of being a father. To dispel the immediate question, no, it does not refer to a troublesome, tempestuous child, but more to the overwhelming complexity that comes from raising a new life and what that means for your own existence, not to mention the whirlwind of life that he must be experiencing concurrently. I leave the viewer to extrapolate other personal meanings from that jumping off point.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
N.C. Winters: “Tempest” took far too long, and was stretched out over a span of a few years. I began in late 2012 and completed it in late 2014. The buyer had infinite patience and is a saint of a patron!

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
N.C. Winters: It’s one of my largest, most intricate and most vibrant to date.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
N.C. Winters: I hate giving this answer, as all art is subjective and one should buy what they like, but I hope buyers can appreciate that “Tempest” is one of my most ambitious pieces to date and pushed me more than any piece in recent memory.

1xRun: Describe the print in one gut reaction word.
N.C. Winters: Massive.
