Kukula’s New Film + Dreams of Summer

1xRUN Thru Interview
Dreams of Summer by Kukula

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, when was it created?
Kukula: I originally drew this painting in 2011, but didn’t get the time to paint it. I was working on a few pieces for Dorothy Circus Summer show and thought it was finally time to finish this one. I had to change a few details as my styled had changed a little since I originally drew it. For this painting I tried to keep the background a little raw, so it will have some more ambiance to it.

1xRUN: What materials did you use to create this piece?
Kukula: The was done with oil on a 26×41cm Medium-Density Fiberboard.

1xRun: When was the piece created and how long did it take to complete?
Kukula: I finished this one over a span of about 3 weeks back in May 2014.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Kukula: It’s the first paintings I finished years after I drew it. I feel like it’s a little more “happy” than most of my work, but only a little. Well, maybe I not…

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Kukula: Because of the pink sky and breeze.

1xRun: Describe the print in one gut reaction word.
Kukula: Bubbly.

1xRun: You have been traveling a bit this year, bring us up to speed on some of your recent travels?
Kukula: I was visiting Israel this month and got to vote, not that it helped in anyway. I’m politically depressed when it comes to Israel, but Israel is great fun in many other ways… food, weather and life in general.

1xRun: You recently worked with Showstudio.com on a film project, tell us a bit about that?
Kukula: A very good friend of mine, Aline Pimental, who is a very talented producer and a fantastic fashion stylist, had an idea for me to make a video of a work in progress. I told her it might be a difficult thing to do as my paintings can take months and that I’m camera shy. So she had a better idea, she talked to Jennifer Massauex, a brilliant photographer and film director who works regularly with Madonna (which I have found a bit intimidating), to make a short film about the process of creation. Jennifer wrote a beautiful script and we shot the movie at my husband’s uncle’s mansion in the Bronx for two days. Aline got us the most beautiful high end dresses and really great crew. Jennifer had composed the music herself and the results were better than anything I ever could have imagined.

I work often with SHOWstudio, I’m so honored to have such support from a master such as Nick Knight. A few weeks ago he invited me to illustrate one of the original Alexander Lee McQueen as part of the Savage Beauty exhibition at the V&A Museum in London.

1xRun: Any upcoming events or shows that you’d like to highlight?
Kukula: I’m working on my solo show now at AFA Gallery. It’s going to be in September, 2016 which means I will not be leaving the house for a few good months.
