Hecate by Jason Levesque

1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about the original piece, when was it created and with what materials?

Jason Levesque: Hecate is a digital piece created in Photoshop. For those interested I work on a 27″ iMac using Photoshop CS6 and a smallish Bamboo Wacom Tablet. I use a lot of scanned textures and custom brushes. The brushes are available at stuntkid.com via the download page. I would say it took around 30 hours from start to finish. It was completed recently on August 30th 2012.

1xRUN: Tell us a little about this piece’s subject, who is she and why did you choose her as the subject for this piece?

Jason Levesque: This was my first time working with Radeo Suicide, but she and I have been wanting to work together for a long time. On my last trip to LA we were finally in the same place at the same time and were able to make it happen. We are both big science nerds and suckers for outdoor adventure, so we took in a good waterfall-side hike where we photographed some insects and poked around the mud for little critters. It was only natural that the piece I did would draw heavily on a biological theme.

1xRUN: You have drawn quite a few infamous beautiful women, tell us a little about some of your other favorites ?
Jason Levesque:  I’ve been extremely lucky to have worked with so many talented people. It’s really hard to narrow down a list of favorites. So many of them have become friends over the years so I’m inclined to rattle off a list of good friends. I’ll say Apnea (below) doesn’t take a bad picture, the hundred or so reference photos I got during our one shoot will go a long ways.

Mosh, of course, nailed some amazing poses, one after another, she pulls them out of nowhere and so rapidly it’s difficult to keep up. Lauren WK (below) and I have only shot once, it was great stuff, but we usually just hang out. She’s super fun.

I could go on and on, Jenny Crandall, Amanda Jones, Che Grepo, all amazing. Oh! I shot with Esme Bianco (below) earlier this year, you may know her as Ros from Game of Thrones. Great girl! Apparently she bought one of my illustration books years ago. I was hugely flattered of course! I shot with Nina Kate in London, owner of Jane Doe Latex and was served tea. Fancy that! Amelia Arsenic too, in London, also served tea.

1xRUN: What artists inspired you when you were first starting out?

Jason Levesque: Katsuya Terada, Barbara Canepa, Hayao Miyazaki all huge influences early on. Later, Ernst Haeckel and a few other early science illustrators have captured my attention.

1xRUN: What else have you been up to lately?

Jason Levesque: Lately I’ve done a bit of curating. Doing my small part to grow the local art culture here in Norfolk, VA. Our little town doesn’t have a lot happening due to a transient population. I’ve also been getting back into ink drawing. Pushing myself in new directions, outside of my comfort zone always shows improvements in unexpected places.
