Beau Stanton Returns With Reason Sleeps

1xRun Thru Interview
Reason Sleeps by Beau Stanton

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about the original piece. When was the piece drawn/created? Is the original still for sale?
Beau Stanton: Reason Sleeps depicts a captain-less sinking ship on a tumultuous ornamented sea ‘watched’ over by a closed eye of providence.  It was created last year for my Sanguine Machine solo exhibition at Gallery Hijinks in San Francisco.  I have since created other images that expand on the imagery in this painting but I felt like this one would make the best print. This original piece is oil on canvas and is available here on 1xRUN.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Beau Stanton: When I’m not painting in the studio I like to get out and explore abandoned sites around the NYC area.  A couple of years ago I went to Staten Island to check out Rossville Boatyard, a huge collection of rusting old ships sitting in a shallow muddy channel. After the trip I immediately got to work on this piece.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Beau Stanton: About a week.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Beau Stanton: It’s a rusty ship spewing design pollution on a churning sea of letterpress ornaments, and there are little mushroom clouds in the portholes.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Beau Stanton: It’s pretty.

1xRun: Describe this print in one gut reaction word.
Beau Stanton: Amazeballs.

1xRun: What else have you been up to lately? What do you have planned for the new year?
Beau Stanton:  Over the Summer I worked on some projects in Europe where I was invited to paint on a remaining section of the Berlin wall that is currently residing at Checkpoint Charlie.  I also had the opportunity to create some site specific installations in an industrial space in East Berlin before heading to Hamburg to help install the George Hearts Maria show at Helium Cowboy Artspace, you can see photos + more here.  More recently I had a piece in the Bad Dads Wes Anderson Tribute show at Spoke Art in San Francisco which is always a fun departure from my usual content.

The next thing is the launch for my custom designed shoes with Jump Deluxe in Tokyo this Spring.  I collaborated with them to create three styles of satin canvas smoking slippers that incorporate elements from my paintings into every square inch of the design, even laser etched design elements on the leather out sole.  In July I have a show at Last Rites Gallery in NYC and then a couple of special projects in Europe later in the year.
