Convergence of Alternate Realities by Ana Bagayan
1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, Is the original still for sale?
Ana Bagayan: The original was created with oil on canvas in February of 2013 for the Futurology show at Copro Gallery where it is currently on display. It depicts my view of our understanding of reality in the future. Yes, the original is available here at 1xRUN!
1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Ana Bagayan: I created the piece partially in inversion so that the E.T. figure feels like a familiar dream. I wanted to recreate what it feels like to wake up from an exciting dream but to only grasp incoherent bits and pieces of it because the conscious mind is unable to decipher the nonlinear distorted timeline of events.
1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Ana Bagayan: The concept formed organically from a rough sketch to the finish. I didn’t know exactly what this dream was going to be about until the image started to form in color. It went through many changes during the painting stage, as the story unfolded. While I think the relationship between the characters in the piece is all open to interpretation, the idea is that this is a place that exists in one’s subconscious where they can access and experience multiple parallel dimensions at once. I named this particular place Germia, a word that my mind repeated during the construction of the piece.
1xRun: How long did the piece take? Any issues that came up?
Ana Bagayan: About two weeks, I think. I don’t think there were many issues I had. Whenever I get an opportunity to make a wish, I wish for a smooth transition through the current painting. My wish must have come true.
1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Ana Bagayan: It is my first piece on canvas. Ed. Note: Each print from both editions will also be hand-embellished with a unique constellation!
1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Ana Bagayan: Because they like it!

Ana Bagayan: Germia.
1xRun: How did the idea for idea for the inversion come about?
Ana Bagayan: I’ve always loved the way inverted imagery looks but felt I needed a good reason for incorporating it into my paintings. When I started exploring alternate realities, I realized I could utilize inversion as a way to illustrate multiple worlds at once. Also, it is a good analogy for parallel dimensions. Everything is the same, but experienced from another perspective.
1xRun: How did you go about painting the inverted images?
Ana Bagayan: I’ve been testing it out on smaller paintings in the months prior to this piece. I’ve found that painting negative imagery is kind of like painting a still life for the first time. You have to trust your eyes to tell you where to put the color until your mind catches up.
1xRun: Can you bring us up to speed since your last release at the end of the year?
Ana Bagayan: Experimenting, writing, and sketching for future paintings for my next show. I have a few group shows coming up in May that will be announced on my website closer to the dates.
1xRun: What other things have you been up to?
Ana Bagayan: I try to find time to go out in nature everyday if possible to recharge, whether is it to the multiple parks in my neighborhood, or drives down to the beach through the mountains. Los Angeles doesn’t have drastic seasonal changes but when you notice the subtleties of plants changing everyday, it is very inspiring and uplifting.
