Victor Spinelli Debuts Embellished Pulp Series

1xRUN Thru Interview
Pulp by Victor Spinelli

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about the images in the Pulp series, were there original pieces that were created or were they made just for a print?
Victor Spinelli: I created a faux “Queen Pulp” comic company about a year ago and this is one of my original series of 12 ‘Pulp Fiction’ covers that I made. I love the old comic book and pulp fiction covers from the 50’s & 60’s so I appropriated my own photographs and I guess re-invented them. The original photograph was taken in 2004 on negative film and the concept for these pieces was created in the spring of 2013.

1xRUN: How did the execution take place for these? What materials were used?
Victor Spinelli: I took the original negative of the photograph and scanned them. I the put some copywriting on them and then painted on them. They are printed on archival photographic canvas and embellished with acrylic paints.

1xRun: How long did these pieces take to complete?
Victor Spinelli: Each one was created in a few hours. I do paint on everyone though.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Victor Spinelli: The original sexy & fun photographs are very popular (especially with women) on their own. But the “Pulp” series is very unique and a branch off from my typical style. They are also a part in the evolution of my art.

1xRun: Why should people buy one of these prints?
Victor Spinelli: They are limited to 33 so they will be an investment, as my past work is increasing in price.

1xRun: Describe this image in one gut reaction word.
Victor Spinelli: Decadent.

1xRun: You recently opened a gallery in Shanghai, how did that go?
Victor Spinelli: The Spinelli Galleries Shanghai is now OPEN for business. After a year in the planning we opened on March 18th. As Shanghai’s resurrection begins as Asia’s financial powerhouse, my work lands at her doorstep at the perfect time. My work is causing a bit of a shock in conservative China. The younger generation is getting it but the older generation is still trying to figure it out. We are situated in the busy area of Tian Zi Fang. Having my art there is also opening my eyes and it is pushing me to create in other ways. I have just completed my first set of pure acrylic and palate knife works of the cityscape of Shanghai’s city.
