Jason Limon Returns With Dualism – Radiance

1xRUN Thru Interview
Dualism – Radiance by Jason Limon

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Jason Limon: At the beginning of this year I began to explore the idea of light versus dark. I spend a lot of time (mood-wise) in the dark area, but I always try to explore past that and look into lighter subjects or feelings. This piece is part of a series called “Dualism” and it is basically made up of two pieces, one side portraying a struggle to keep the light going and the other side trying to get out of the dark.

jason-limon-dualism-radiance-24x17-blog-01

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Jason Limon: It was painted with acrylics on wood panels.

jason-limon-dualism-radiance-24x17-blog-02

1xRun: When was the piece created?
Jason Limon: I did this piece in February of 2015. It took me about two weeks on and off to complete.

jason-limon-dualism-radiance-24x17-blog-03

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Jason Limon: I’ve been reading various books on mythology and religion and know that through time many were based on worshipping the sun and all have elements of good vs. evil. Just like these beliefs, people struggle with dark feelings within them and want to escape those feeling, I being one of them. I try release some of these feeling in my more recent paintings.

Mab Graves Debuts With Snow White In The Black Forest

1xRUN Thru Interview
Snow White in the Black Forest by Mab Graves

1xRUN: Tell us a bit about this piece.
Mab Graves: This piece was created for “Glass, Cinder and Thorns III” for Inner State gallery and 1xRun opening this month. Glass, Cinder & Thorns in its third year running is an all-female [artist] show exploring fairy tales, their darker side and what they mean to each one of us.

glass-cinder-and-thorns-flyer-1xRUN-blog-640

1xRUN: Where did you draw inspiration from while creating this piece?
Mab Graves: I started working on this piece in January and the themes of a dark fairytale show were really perfect for me at the time. I was going through a lot in my life and it was in a very dark place emotionally, so getting to pour all of that into this piece was really perfect.

mab-grave-snow-white-1xrun-blog-01

In the early stages, Snow was actually running through a meadow into the dark forest, but as things progressed and my world got sadder, the forest began to grow up around her, engulfing her. It was very therapeutic in a way, because even as the angry trees and ghouls in this piece were threatening Snow, she still had her little band of forest creatures and familiars with her. Even though they can’t necessarily protect her, they aren’t abandoning her and running away. They are with her till the end. I guess there were a lot of subconscious parallels.
This piece was a distraction and an escape for me. It was one dark, chaotic little piece of sanity in a rather shattering time for me personally.

mab-grave-snow-white-1xrun-blog-04

1xRUN: Being as Glass, Cinder & Thorns is fairytale themed show, what made you choose Snow White?
Mab Graves: Snow White has always been my favorite fairytale. I loved the color palette – so much darker and more shaded than a lot of fairytales – and I loved the old German feel. My mother’s side is German so there was always something in it I identified with. It was always the one I wanted to read and my ancient copy of Grimm’s always opened to it. When I was little, my best friend and I would throw a blanket over the TV and act out the old Disney movie in mime while it played.

mab-grave-snow-white-1xrun-blog-03

1xRUN: Tell us how the execution for the original piece came about.
Mab Graves: This piece was created in two parts: the first part of the piece was painted in oils, then it was scanned, digitized, enlarged, and printed on canvas. Then I took the canvas and painted a second layer over it – with iridescent ghouls and ghosts, new flowers etc. The entire finished piece is really hard to photograph because of the ghost layers – and that was intentional – I wanted it to be something that could really only be experienced in person – by gallery goers and the final owner of the piece. I wanted it to be a special and personal experience – just like fairy tales are to each one of us.

Ewok Debuts With Mischief!

1xRUN Thru Interview
Mischief! by Ewok

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece?
Ewok: I love graffiti, and I hate police. This is a humorous look at the tension between the two.

 ewok-mischief-20x16-blog-03

1xRun: Was these piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Ewok: The theme is part of my overall 20-something year old love affair with graffiti. It’s part of my evolving perspective on it going from being a secret hobby/identity to being a viable means of self expression and quasi-making a living.

ewok-mischief-20x16-blog-04

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Ewok: Micron drafting pens, Sharpies and Photoshop.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Ewok: Just from my imagination I guess. I recently started putting a top-hat on my throw-up ‘E’, and then the E kind of evolved into a character. From there the character started being in all these graffiti-type scenarios, so I figured what better way to show that than having him being chased by some hideous pig/cop character.

ewok-mischief-20x16-blog-02

1xRun: How long did this piece take to complete?
Ewok: The drawings I worked on over 2 or 3 days and then a lot of computer fuckery that took way too long. I don’t know, a handful of days.

1xRun: What do you feel is unique about this piece?
Ewok: I don’t know. Maybe how the characters are kind of superimposed on this sort of generic urban graffiti backdrop. I like utilizing random graffiti in these kinds of pieces. The stuff you see that isn’t really aspiring to be ‘graffiti’ graffiti, but more civilian scrawling on shit. I love seeing ‘Metallica’ and ‘2-Pac’ unironically written on walls. That kind of blue-collar pointless graffiti is pure and innocent. I always wonder what motivates someone to do all of the things necessary to go write 2-Pac on a wall.

ewok-mischief-20x16-blog-01

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Ewok: Because if they don’t buy it, then the terrorists really have won.

1xRun: Describe these piece in one gut reaction word.

David Lyle Debuts With All Aboard

1xRUN Thru Interview
All Aboard by David Lyle

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, was it created solely for this release or was there an original piece created?
David Lyle: This piece is titled “All Aboard” and is a painting I made to be part of a new body of work titled “Everyone’s a Critic.” The original painting is still available.

david-lyle-everyones-a-critic-blog-01

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
David Lyle: This painting is part of my current show titled ‘Everyone’s a critic.” This series presents a caustic commentary on the art world and what mystifies the public about the art world – art that is not made by the artists’ themselves, money as an end game, art-speak, etc.

david-lyle-everyones-a-critic-blog-02

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
David Lyle: The painting is done with only black paint on a white gessoed wood panel.

1xRun: When was the piece created?
David Lyle: This painting was done in the past few months.

david-lyle-everyones-a-critic-blog-03

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
David Lyle: I would like to highlight the fact that you can see this painting along with the others in the show “Everyone’s A Critic” live at Lyons Wier Gallery in NYC at 542 west 24th street up until March 14.

david-lyle-everyones-a-critic-blog-04

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
David Lyle: The idea behind this piece is basically about the acceptance and commercialization of graffiti. Where in the past, graffiti was looked at as an illegal eyesore to the public and now it is adorned and used in the main steam media, sold as fine art and used for commercial purposes.

david-lyle-everyones-a-critic-blog-05

1xRun: How long did the piece take to complete?
David Lyle: This painting took me around two to three weeks to make.

1xRun: What do you feel is unique about this piece?
David Lyle: I think what is unique about this piece and all of my work is the fact that I use only black paint to make my paintings. Along with my sociopolitical views on things going on in and around my life.

david-lyle-everyones-a-critic-blog-06

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
David Lyle: I think people should buy this piece if they can connect with my satirical commentaries and also can appreciate my process of making the paintings by only using black paint.

1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.

Bob Dob Returns With Barrels Of Fun

1xRUN Thru Interview
Barrels Of Fun by Bob Dob

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, was it created solely for this release or was there an original piece created?
Bob Dob: The painting was created for my solo show last November called “Exit Home”, the narrative for the show was how numb the general public has become to violence through our entertainment. I took two very recognizable pop culture characters, Mario and Luigi, and removed them from their world and put them into ours as LA gang members. My studio mate at the time was Greg Simkins who helped with the graffiti. All the paintings from the show had elements of L.A. gang culture but this piece “Barrels of Fun” focused on the whole story in one shot. The original is still available. For pricing and availability of Bob Dob’s “Barrels Of Fun email [email protected] for additional information.

bob-dob-barrels-of-fun-process-blog-01

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Bob Dob: I projected my sketch onto canvas for this painting and then built up the values with black and white gesso. Once the under painting is there I start glazing color with oil paints.

bob-dob-barrels-of-fun-process-blog-02

1xRun: When was this piece created?
Bob Dob: The idea for the painting started back in 2011. After many sketches I finally started the painting May 2014.

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Bob Dob: I tried to bring in as many characters from Super Mario Bros as I could. Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong and Princess Peach are in the front car with Bowser and some Koopas getting blown up and a few Goombas hanging out on the street.

bob-dob-barrels-of-fun-process-blog-04

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Bob Dob: I like to work on numerous paintings at one time so this one would have took about 6 weeks if I did it non stop.

1xRun: What do you feel is unique about this piece?
Bob Dob: I experimented with 2 strong light sources with this painting. The fires and explosions created some nice complementary colors on the buildings while the warm light from the sun hit the buildings.

bob-dob-barrels-of-fun-process-blog-03

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Bob Dob: Because it will be a great conversation piece at Thanksgiving. Plus, if you’re a gamer I think you’ll enjoy the new take on Mario and Luigi.

Chris Saunders Returns With Wolf Mandala

1xRUN Thru Interview
Wolf Mandala by Chris Saunders

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, was it created solely for this release or was there an original piece created?
Chris Saunders: The original was sold to a good friend of mine last year, which began as a custom commission that evolved over time.

CS_WM_07

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had?
Chris Saunders: This piece is part of an ongoing series of animal archetypes I have been exploring.

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Chris Saunders: There are lots of sacred symbols that are in this piece that were created with intention to protect the space that it is hung in. During the time I was experiencing some internal shifts that inspired me to create a piece that served as a protective guardian and the Wolf Archetype strongly embodied that quality.

CS_WM_03

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Chris Saunders: The Wolf Archetype to me resembles a symbol of an intelligence as well as a fierce guardian. My work is about creating a reflective mirror that allows the viewer to see within themselves and evoke positive internal shifts. I’ve been exploring combining archetypal symbols with Mandalas that serve as symbols of strength to protect the space they are in as well as remind the viewer of their own internal strength and power.

CS_WM_04

1xRun: What do you feel is unique about this piece?
Chris Saunders: The metallic flake in the inks on this piece really make it come to life. The guys over at Inhouse did such a great job as always, thanks to Frank and Roberta.

CS_WM_09

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Chris Saunders: This Wolf will have your back if someone breaks into your place.

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, was it created solely for this release or was there an original piece created?
Saner: The original piece was created for my exhibition “El Cenit del Venado” (FIFTY24MX, 2013). After many people were interested in getting a print of this piece I decided it would be good to create a limited edition of it.

saner-process-blog-01

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Saner: As part of an exhibition, this piece was key to appreciate all that we gets in the way, because sometimes we forget that every moment may be something that changes our lives forever.

saner-process-blog-02

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece with?
Saner: The original was drawn with ink on cotton paper.

1xRun: When was the piece created?
Saner: October 2013

saner-process-blog-03

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Saner: I rarely use color in my ink drawings and this piece seeks to emphasize the colors of the main character, to realize we should appreciate the wonders around them.

saner-process-blog-04

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Saner: The idea was born thanks to the whole concept of the exhibition.

saner-process-blog-06

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Saner: Because at some point we’ve all forgotten to appreciate the simplicity of life. The work comes from the idea of reminding us that we must never forget that.

Throwback Thursday: Pow!Wow! Hawaii 2014 Print Series

Last year for the annual Pow!Wow! Hawaii festival, we put together what Complex Magazine called “The art print drop to end all art print drops…”We teamed up with our pals PangeaSeed, and gave local non-profit environments activists, locals and visitors the chance to scoop up sold out prints from the series, which we released on a daily basis throughout the entire festival.

The event culminated in an exhibition of prints at Loft In Space on the magical island of Oahu. The vibe was chill, the beer was cold and amazing talent was everywhere, including not only showing artist but also attendees. Check out the pictures below to relive the finale celebration that concluded of our epic two-week journey to Pow!Wow! Hawaii.

We are currently in the planning stages for this years activation, and we have another amazing set of print drops in store, so stay tuned here at our new blog for updates.
