Adam Caldwell Returns With Cauldron Reflections Of A New Generation Opens July 13th at Thinkspace

1xRun Thru Interview
Cauldron by Adam Caldwell

1xRun: Tell us a bit about this piece, Is the original still for sale?
Adam Caldwell: This piece was created in the early months of this year. I really like this piece, especially the composition. The original is for sale through ThinkSpace Gallery.

1xRUN: What materials were used to create this piece?
Adam Caldwell: It is oil on canvas, pretty much my standard technique.

1xRun: Anything immediate you would like us to highlight?
Adam Caldwell: This piece will be in a show opening July 13th at Thinkspace gallery in LA. The show is called “Reflections of a New Generation” and includes me, Joram Roakes, and Ekundayo. It is part of a series I am doing that combines history, advertising images, and conventional representations of women.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Adam Caldwell: About a week of long nights.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Adam Caldwell: In this painting I completely finished the central figure to a high degree of detail and then destroyed it by pouring thinner on the canvas and scraping off about 90% of what I had done.

I then repainted details and destroyed several times, until I had a balance of rendered detail and spontaneous paint marks. It was a painful process; letting go of that finished looking figure painting, but its helping me become a more spontaneous and braver artist.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Adam Caldwell: It will look great on the wall above their collection of antique ceramic figurines and 1950’s bondage gear.

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Adam Caldwell: Ecstatic.

1xRun: What have you’ been up to so far in 2013?
Adam Caldwell: I’ve been in four group shows in LA, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. I’ve also been doing a couple of commissions. Mostly, I’ve been preparing for my show at Thinkspace this summer.

1xRun: What else do you have in the works for the summer and fall?
Adam Caldwell: After My show in July I have three commissions I have to complete and then work on my solo show at Shooting Gallery in early 2014.

1xRun: Where else can people find you?
