ASVP Returns With Balaclava Screen Prints

1xRUN Thru Interview
Balaclava by ASVP

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about the Balaclava series, how did this image come about?
ASVP:  The image explores the classic relationship between, love and hate. It also touches on the idea that, what we so often worship one minute, we turn our backs on and defile the next.

1xRun: When was it first used in your work?
ASVP: The original image was drawn about three years ago. The concept was in development for a year prior to that.asvpbalac1xRun: How long did these pieces take?
ASVP: The prints took roughly three months to create. The original artwork took roughly a month to actually draw. The knit pattern took quite a while to draw because of how intricate it is. Because we print everything ourselves, this also adds time to our process. After printing, we also closely review every print and touch-up each one, with paint brushes where necessary. This adds a lot of time to things but insures that each print we’re sending out of the studio is of the highest quality that we can make it.asvp_process_11xRun: What is unique about this pieces compared with your other work?
ASVP:  This piece is by far our most aggressive image. A lot of our other work uses imagery that is much more benign. The Balaclava seems to work harder than some of our other images, it has gotten a strong response from a lot of people, it seems to really grab people’s attention and interest.asvp_process_31xRun: Why should people buy these prints?
ASVP:  After we made the larger sized edition, we received several requests to create the piece in a size that as more approachable for younger collectors and collectors that didn’t have tons of wall space, we decided to make these editions in response to that feedback.

1xRun: Describe these pieces in one gut reaction word.
ASVP: Disruptive.1xRun_ASVP-Balaclavas6401xRun: You’ve been staying busy since our last release, what else have you been up to?
ASVP: We just released a series of pieces (t-shirts, trench coat and knit top & cardigan) that we made in collaboration with the fashion designer and artist, agnés b. asvp1asvp2Also coming up on our schedule are three outdoor installations, two in Bushwick, Brooklyn and one in Wicker Park, Chicago. In the studio we’re working on a series of brand new images that are slated for a large-scale solo show in 2014.
