Charlie Immer Returns With The Bone Guide

1xRUN Thru Interview
The Bone Guide by Charlie Immer

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Charlie Immer: This is the first painting I have done with fur. I had a lot of fun painting it. I also get a kick out of the skeletons pose. The painting was completed for a Halloween themed show. I wanted to pair classic Halloween characters in a fresh way and in unique colors. The original has been sold, however, I would like to offer the original sketch for sale with the edition.

1xRUN: When was this piece created and with what materials?
Charlie Immer:
The painting was made on gessoed panel with oil paints in October of 2012.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Charlie Immer:
Most of the skeletons in my work have eyes and this one doesn’t, so I created a guide cat for him to get around and warm his bones.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Charlie Immer:
The color palette and the kitty cat.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Charlie Immer:
Buy this print if you are a cat person or a skeleton person.

1xRun: Describe this piece in one gut reaction word.
Charlie Immer:
Togetherness.immerblog1xRun: You have definitely been staying busy since your last RUN with us, bring us up to speed on what you have been up to?
Charlie Immer:
Well, I’m working around the clock on my upcoming solo show at La Luz De Jesus in April. Its by far my largest show to date. I’m excited to see how people respond to it. The subject matter is possibly very off-putting. I also just finished working on a special edition album cover for the flaming lips which I had a great time working on.

1xRun: You mentioned to us previously that you have been using photoshop to aid you with creating these oil paintings, tell us a bit about your process and how you go about creating an intricate oil painting like this?
Charlie Immer:
I use Photoshop for the sketch phase. Recently I’ve been drawing individual things in my sketch and scanning them into my pc. Then I use Photoshop to combine these elements into a composition for a painting. It enables very quick and drastic changes to take place in a composition like duplicating objects and changing the scale and relationships of the characters to the objects.

1xRun: Your work often features this explosively colorful color palette, have you always been drawn to bright varied palettes like this?
Charlie Immer:
Yes I have. It’s most likely linked to my fondness of candy and birthday party supplies.

1xRun: Have any new artists been inspiring you lately?
Charlie Immer:
Jean Pierre Roy blows my mind. I’ve been looking at a lot of 16bit video game for inspiration like Super Mario World and Super Metroid. I love the color palettes and the texture art.

1xRun: Any new music you have been turned onto lately?
Charlie Immer:
I’m really into the album Psychic by Darkside and its eerie atmosphere. Erik Suhrke’s soundtrack to Spelunky is a lot of fun and sounds like a long lost Sega Genesis ost. The new Fuck Buttons, Slow Focus is perfect zone out music.

1xRun: What was the last piece of art that you bought?
Charlie Immer:
I recently traded a piece with one of my art idols: Dave Cooper. It’s a drawing of naked women going to town on each other in various ways. It’s awesome.
