Dan Quintana Returns With Zero Instruments

1xRUN Thru Interview
Zero Instruments by Dan Quintana

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, what materials did you use?
Dan Quintana: This painting is a solid bridge to my new work. A female figure is being taken held hostage/possession by an outside entity or quite possibly her own demons. Whether she’s taking pleasure by this situation is unknown. I used oil paints on wood panel to create this piece. Thin razor layers of oil were applied to the figures skin.

1xRun: This piece is part of your upcoming exhibition of the same name is that correct?
Dan Quintana:  Correct. It will be the centerpiece for my upcoming show “Zero Instruments” held in San Francisco at Vanish Fine Art on May 25th.

1xRun: How did the idea and execution come about?
Dan Quintana: I am obsessed with the idea of the mind creating it’s own worlds of possession and separating the consciousness to the unconsciousness state of mind.

1xRun: How long did this piece take?
Dan Quintana: I finished this piece in the winter of 2012, it took about 7 months from start to finish.

Yes.

I do not have a favorite. All have been great in their own unique way.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? How about now?
Dan Quintana: Hieronymus Bosch, Arnold Böcklin and Max Ernst. Still those three inspire me.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work? W hat is your environment like when you work?
Dan Quintana: I have ran out of music to listen to. It’s now mostly classical — Chopin is a favorite — and live feeds of police scanners. Those two go well hand in hand.
