Dxtr Debuts The Future Is Now As The Weird Invade Detroit For Group Show + Lecture Series

1xRun Thru Interview
The Future Is Now by Dxtr

What materials were used to create this piece?
Dxtr: As usual for me, when it comes to screen printing I use pen, paper and then transfer to Adobe Illustrator.

1xRun: When was the piece drawn and created?
Dxtr: This one was created exclusively for 1xRUN as part of our upcoming group show with The Weird in Detroit, so “Future Is Now” was done in May 2013.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Dxtr: This piece took me six or seven working days. In the moment, I tried to combine my friendly characters with some deeper meanings. My current stuff is very mystic and cryptic and I try to show what is going on in our century. People need to wake up and see whats going on in our beloved world. That’s why the title is “Future Is Now”. There are a few things going on that really piss me off, so there was somehow the need to illustrate it.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Dxtr: This is always hard to say, if I had to guess I would say six or seven working days, but I never count the hours.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Dxtr: This is possibly my best screen print so far and as I said, the piece was illustrated exclusively for 1xRun and will never be available afterwards. I like to keep things limited so grab one before they’re gone with the wind.

1xRun: Describe this print in one gut reaction word.
Dxtr: Dystopia.

1xRun: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
Dxtr: I’ve been drawing since childhood, then started with Graffiti in 1999 at the age of 16. An extremely ugly bomb was my first piece at a freeway in Germany (Dest was the name).

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? How about now?
Dxtr: Early on I was a huge fan of Toast from Switzerland for example. Always loved his characters in my beginning. I’ve seen him painting once, incredible for that time. As for now, first off all my gang THE WEIRD. Cone, Nychos, Vidam, Hrvb, Look, Low Bros, Rookie and Frau Isa. I have a super inspiring and talented friends. Otherwise I enjoy really graphic and illustrative mural art, like Flying Fortress, 123Klan, Dabs Myla and Hello Monster.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work?
Dxtr: Yes, always listening to some tunes. Always depends on the mood. At the moment I start my days with The Cure. Afterwards some MF Doom, Aesop Rock… rap stuff. Sometimes psychedelic rock, electro and even metal.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why? Any deceased artists?
Dxtr: There are a few I really admire. Thanks to The WEIRD I’ve already collaborated with a few of my heroes. Within the graffiti world, it would be cool to work on something with Grito from Spain in the near future. I extremely like his simple shapes and the huge size of his pieces. Other than graffiti, Robert Crumb is definitely my favorite. No need to explain I guess.  For the latter it would be Jean Giraud (Moebius). It would have been an honor to meet him.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it? The last?
Dxtr: A Jon Burgerman poster which is still hanging in my kitchen. Nowadays we exchange sometimes. I’ve grabbed a few prints from Cone and Nychos, along with a painting from Vidam last year. Dope stuff!
