JeanPaul Mallozzi Returns With Spring Never Falls

1xRun Thru Interview
Spring Never Falls by JeanPaul Mallozzi

1xRUN: Tell us a little bit about this piece, what materials did you use?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: This piece is my personal spin on the ugly ducking story. The original piece was very big, 39.5″ x 95″, and it was made with graphite, watercolor, acrylic, and iridescent paint.

1xRun: When was the piece drawn and created?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: It was completed in April 2012 for my recent show at k N 0 B 0 D Y at 101/Exhibit.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
JeanPaul Mallozzi:  I really wanted to push myself with scale with the show, the  gallery walls were so large, it just seemed like the right time to really go big.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: On and off it work about 3 months, I was working on several pieces at once.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: By far, it is the biggest graphite drawing I’ve made, the original was about 3.5 x  8ft long.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: The piece is about looking back at those who tried to put you down, knowing you’ll rise above them and just looking back with a content smile. With some of us it just takes a little more time. I think a lot of us have been though that obstacle at least once.

1xRun: Describe this print in one gut reaction word.
JeanPaul Mallozzi: Resilient.

1xRun: When did you first start making art?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: I started drawing when I was 4,  but I seriously started making art during junior year of high school when I went to a advanced portfolio development class.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on?   What artists inspire you now?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: Early on it was Phil Hale, Norman Rockwell, Sargent and J.W. Waterhouse  This is a long list but off the top of my head, but now it is  Jeremy Geddes, Matt Dangler, Jeff McMillian and  my 9 yr old niece, who reminds me how much fun art still is, and not just work.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: I go back and forth, lately its been Dustin O’ Halloran piano opus collection, but then something I need to hear voices in the background, so I end up putting on the Golden Girls just to keep me laughing while I work.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why? Any deceased artist?
JeanPaul Mallozzi: Joe Sorren,  I love the visceral emotions his work conveys while being so free with paint. For the latter, I recently was introduced to Jehan Georges Vibert, and his paintings about the clergy. His incredible skill mixed with his humor, I think would be awesome.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it? The last?
JeanPaul Mallozzi:  I can’t recall the first piece that I bought. The last was a Jeff Soto print on wood.

1xRun: It has been a little bit since your last release with us, what have you been up to?
JeanPaul Mallozzi:  My solo show k N 0 B 0 D Y at 101/Exhibit was a big success. I was so stressed because the show was during August, one of the worst months in Miami, and galleries are very slow, and some just close shop for summer. The turn out of people shocked the gallery staff saying it was the kind of crowd that shows up during the high  months or even Art Basel. I also got to show at the Miami Project fair during Art Basel in Dec.

I was happy to be invited to Last Rites Gallery 5th Anniversary show in NYC. l’m  also making new work for Art Hamptons Fair this summer. Art Basel Miami is also in the works.
