1xRun Thru Interview
Trick or Treat by Megan Massacre

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent  theme, series or show that you had?
Megan Massacre:  I made this piece on its own, it originally started as an idea for a tattoo and I loved it so much that I wanted to turn it into a piece of art. Halloween is my favorite holiday so I thought it was an appropriate time of year to release it.

1xRUN: When was this piece created and with what materials ?
Megan Massacre:
I made this piece throughout October, 2013, it was just recently finished actually. The paper is Bristol, and I used a combination of Copic marker, Prismacolor pencil, Ink, water color and acrylic paint.

1xRun: Anything you would like us to highlight?
Megan Massacre:
My favorite part of this painting is the flames coming out of the pumpkins eyes. I used paint on the original to give it a little 3D effect.

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Megan Massacre:
I originally made the design for a tattoo, but loved it so much I wanted to make it into a piece of art. I love Halloween, so of course, I adore jack-o-lanterns. I am also very fond of cats. As far as the execution, I tend to stick to very precise art tools like markers and colored pencils because my comfort zone lies in tattooing, which is extremely precise. However, I did work with some paint in this project; I am a big fan of using mixed medium to create a piece that flow well.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Megan Massacre:
To be precise would be impossible!  I worked on it during the sparse moments of free time between tattooing and shooting over the month of October.  Probably close to 15 hours total.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Megan Massacre:
I think it’s unique because its my first art piece that is an organic blend of both my tattooing and art style, where as in my work thus far there has been a definitive difference in both.

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Megan Massacre:
I think they should buy it because it’s so darn cute…plus it’s a great piece for this season annually and can appeal to adults and their children.

1xRun: Describe this print in one gut reaction word.
Megan Massacre:
Aaadorable!1xRUN-Megan-Massacre-Image-13x17-EMAIL-C1xRun: When did you first start making art? What was your first piece?
Megan Massacre:
I’ve been an artist since I was young, but I began to make career of it about 10 years ago when I became a tattoo artist. Throughout my career I painted with water color, but only this past year did I really start exploring creating art outside of tattooing. I feel like this year is the real beginning of my career in the art world outside of tattooing.

My first real piece of art was made about 5 years ago, a water color painting that I actually never named. It’s of a corpse-like girl, inspired by the movie the “Corpse Bride.” It’s now hanging in the tattoo studio Deep Six Laboratory in Philadelphia.

However my first piece in this reinvention of my art style was done earlier this year, titled “Down the Rabbit Hole,” which is currently hanging at the Sacred Gallery in NYC.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on? How about now?
Megan Massacre:
Early on I was heavily influenced by tattoo artists–that’s how I started my artistic career. Dave Fox, Nick Baxter and Joe Capabianco were just a very few of the many. However I was also inspired by some low brow artists as well.  Artists such as Brom, Mark Ryden, Tara McPherson, Ray Cesar,  etc. As for now, there are so many artists I derive my inspiration.  Some of the artists that inspire me that cross both into both tattooing and the fine art worlds would be Nikko Hurtado, Dave Tevenal, and Gustavo Rimada. Some current artists that inspire me are Brandi Milne, Camille Rose Garcia, Adam Wallacavage, Chet Zar, and Natalie Shau.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what?
Megan Massacre:
Yes I always do, most of the time it’s a music score by Danny Elfman, he is my favorite composer. For the “Trick or Treat” painting I listened to the “Edward Scissorhands” score.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why?
Megan Massacre:
I would have to say Tara McPherson, because she’s an amazing artist and great person.  Her style has been inspiring me from my beginnings as an artist and still is to this present day.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it? The last?
Megan Massacre:
I just bought my first piece of original art a few months ago actually, it was a work from the talented artist Cam Rackam titled “Artimus and the Death of Orion” from his solo exhibition “Pantheon” at Sacred Gallery in NYC. The was would be a piece that I purchased titled “BUHAHAHA” by Adam Wallacavage at his recent exhibition “Magic Mountain” at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in NYC.
