Adam Caldwell is an Oakland-based fine artist who plays with elements of abstract expressionism, classical figuration, and pop art. Using a mixture of oil painting and collage, Caldwell’s unique mixed-media approach lends itself to a seamless blend of abstraction with photorealism. The result is complex and dramatic storytelling. In The Veil of Illusion, an onlooker watches as a film crew captures an armed soldier marching through the desert. The metaphor is critical: How accurate is the media’s portrayal of war? What’s missing from the stories we receive see at home? In the era of “fake news”, the allegory feels as relevant and real as ever.
