Casey Weldon Returns With The Headdress Series

1xRun Thru Interview
Headdress Series by Casey Weldon

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about the Headdress series?
Casey Weldon: Each of the pieces was created using acrylic on a 16×16” piece of birch. Back in 2008, I did about 9 tiny headdress pieces, each featuring strange objects in an ornamental and ceremonial fashion. I liked the idea of using the craft of the headdress to display the objects and ideas we worship in modern society. After abandoning the idea for many years I came back to it last year with the intention of developing the original though in a more intricate, yet ambiguous fashion. Pun intended. These pieces were made in November of 2012  for the Prisma Collective’s group show “Second Sight” at Trifecta Gallery in Las Vegas.

1xRun: How long did these pieces take?
Casey Weldon: I painted the three simultaneously in about 10 days or so.

1xRun: What is unique about these piece?
Casey Weldon: Even though the 3 are intended to be so similar in composition, I wanted to provide a different combination of objects and references in each set. Dead Meat is definitely on the darker side with its acknowledgement of mortality, while Sweet Bee celebrates pollination and the beginning of life. Ice Moth is somewhere in the middle, mixing the threat of the cold and unrest of the insect with the comfort of the patterns we make for ourselves and those nature provides for us. I hope that doesn’t sound more pretentious than I think it does.

1xRun: Why should people buy one of these prints?
Casey Weldon: If they like bees, meat, shotguns, cigarettes, moths, crocheting, trees, or girls with their faces painted.

1xRun: Describe these pieces in one gut reaction word.
Casey Weldon: Heady.

1xRun: Bring us up to speed on what you have been up to since your last release, you just had a show of all cat paintings correct? How did that show go?
Casey Weldon: Yes, the all kitty themed show titled Meow Brow opened in September at Spoke Art in San Francisco featuring a lot of 4 eyed cats similar to the piece that was featured in the last round with 1xRun. I believe the show was sold out by the day after the opening, but the best part of it was that while planning the show we learned that famed internet catlebrity Lil’ Bub (and her man Mike) were going to be in SF the same weekend of the show. What started as a small Bub tribute show that would take place in the back of the gallery during my opening blossomed into a full fledged show of its own when Spoke opened it’s new space right next to their existing one. It was amazing, a ton of cat inspired art with Lil Bub in attendance. The best part was seeing the reaction, I believe people really enjoyed the whole thing.

1xRun: Anything else exciting you have coming up?
Casey Weldon: Exciting will never be my middle name.  However, this fall I’ll be showing with Spoke at the Beyond Eden and LA Art Show fairs in Los Angeles, a few group shows, and a 4 man show at WWA in January.
