Through My Lens: Ricky Powell @ Murals In The Market

With our newest recurring column Through My Lens we’ll take a peek through the lens of various artists, photographers, 1xRUN staff and more to showcase unique perspectives on this year’s Murals In The Market. As we kick things off we turn things over to 1xRUN alumni and storied photographer Ricky Powell as he takes us through his experience for Murals In The Market 2016…

“I ain’t no art expert but I’m glad I put my pants on and got out the house to Detroit for the #MuralsInTheMarket fest. There were about 40 artists/muralists from around the country and Europe who came in to paint the sides of buildings. It was a great gathering of individuals/personalities… people conversated, shared thoughts and ideas, and joked with chunky chuckles. It was good to be around. I was brought out to take pictures and enhance the ambiance… I guess… with my illcentric sense of humor. 1xRUN put everyone up in a very nice hotel within walking distance of the Eastern Market area that had really cool food shops. I liked the vibe there of the locals… strangers nod and say whaddup in acknowledgement as they pass each other on the street. I couldn’t believe it… it was refreshing as well as pleasant (NYC has grown wackazoid as transplants have stank up the environment with nauseating self-entitlement.)

I enjoyed going around to see the murals and gained an appreciation of the craftsmanship involved. It was like a 10-day vacay, which I needed. It was like *nourishment for my soul*. I wanna say thank you to the artists and the 1xRUN famalam for embracing me. I’m #humbleized. Also honored to be in Detroit to experience their historic come-up it’s having in the contemporary art scene. Love Y*all… Stay up!” —Ricky Powell
